How do I use test security for an essay?

When a quiz or a prompt for an essay question is accessed from Blackboard, Respondus LockDown Browser can prevent students from using unauthorized resources.

Students will need to download the Lockdown Browser to complete the essay in a secure environment. The download link is under Technology Links on the Institution page in Blackboard.

Instructions

  1. Create a test in Blackboard and add an essay question to the Test Canvas.

  2. Enable Respondus Lockdown Browser for the test.

Create a test with an essay question

  1. In a content area, click on Assessments then Test.

  2. On the next page, click on the Create button to create a new test.

  3. Name the test and optionally enter a link description and test instructions.

  4. On the Test Canvas, select Create Question and select a the Essay question type.

  5. Provide the necessary information to create the question and click Submit.

Then deploy the test in a content area.

Enable Respondus Lockdown Browser

  1. On the Course Management menu, choose Course Tools, then select Respondus Lockdown Browser.

  2. Click on the action link (arrow button) beside the exam name and choose Settings.

  3. Choose Require Respondus Lockdown Browser for this exam.

    Under Lockdown Browser Settings, choose Require Respondus Lockdown Browser for this exam.
  4. Click Save + Close.

The assessment will now require students to use LockDown Browser.

For more test security, instructors can also add Respondus Monitor (automated video proctoring).
