How does Panopto grade the percentage of the video the students viewed?

Panopto allows instructors to grade students for the percentage of a video they’ve watched. For more information on how this grade is determined, see the information below.

Question: How does Panopto grade percentage viewed?

Answer:

  • Grades are not sent to the Grade Center until three hours after the user has started watching the video. Grades may take up to 24 hours to push to the Grade Center.

  • The reported percentage will always be the highest percentage of the video the student has watched.

  • The percentage viewed is the amount of a video's timeline that has been watched by a viewer. Panopto breaks up each video into 100 segments. A viewer must watch at least one second from each segment to receive credit towards the overall percentage viewed.

    • For example, a 10-minute video is 600 seconds, so a 10-minute video will have 100 segments of six seconds each. Each segment contributes 1% to the overall percentage.

  • The option to Watch in Panopto, represented by the pop-out arrow icon in the lower right corner of the video, will be greyed out and unavailable as we do not allow the Panopto Interactive Viewer to be launched in a new tab if the video is being graded as a quiz or based on a view.
