When are Panopto videos archived?

The archive process begins when videos are approved for archiving by a Panopto administrator at the University of Alabama. Archiving videos is a necessary first step to reducing the amount of storage we are using and to ensure that our Panopto environment is operating at peak performance. The video content remains in our Panopto environment, in an archived status, to ensure important content is not removed without notice.

Users are not notified that videos have been archived.

Timeline

The first archive takes place December 2025. Future archives will be done before each Fall semester.

Panopto videos to be archived

Most Panopto videos will be archived 2 years after their Last Viewed Date. Archived videos, if not restored, will be deleted 2 years after they are archived.

For more information about this policy, visit the Panopto Retention Policy article.

Panopto videos by UA Online

Videos that are developed by UA Online have a separate retention policy. These videos will be archived either 2 years after their last viewed date or 10 years after their creation. Archived videos will be permanently deleted, if not restored, 1 year after they are archived.

All of these videos are also subject to UA Online and OTIDE policies for content. For more information, visit this article: Panopto Retention Policy - OTIDE page

Archived videos can be restored

A video that has been archived is still in the Panopto system, but is not immediately viewable. Users can request that the video is restored for viewing.
