How do I set up a one-time exception for a student?

When special circumstances arise, you can give an individual student an exception on a specific test or assignment. For example, you may want to allow a student to make up an exam or assignment they missed. An exception includes additional attempts, rescheduled due dates, or extended access, even if the assessment is hidden from other students.

Exceptions are different from accommodations

An accommodation applies to all assessments in your course for an individual student. Exceptions only apply to a single assessment.

If you need to add an accommodation for a student, please use our guide for adding accommodations: How do I add accommodations in Ultra?

Instructions

To add an exception:

  1. Open the Gradebook to the Students tab.

  2. Select the name of the student who needs the exception.

  3. Locate the item that needs an exception and select the three dots to open the menu.

  4. Choose Add or edit exceptions from the list of options.

  5. Exceptions options:

Due date: If the student needs an extended or later due date, use the exceptions panel to assign a due date specifically for the student. This option is useful if you have the “prohibit late submissions” or “prohibit new attempts after the due date” settings enabled on an assignment or test.

Availability: If you need to give the student extended access to an item, use the exceptions panel to add specific availability dates and times. This option is useful if you need to give a student access to an assignment or test even though it is unavailable to the rest of the course.

  1. Select Save when you are finished editing the options in the exceptions panel.

Blackboard will not notify the student that you’ve added an exception. You must let the student know that you’ve given them an exception to an assessment.
