Within a course, an instructor may choose to provide extra credit to students. There are various reasons to calculate extra credit in Blackboard.

Ideas for extra credit:

  • Create an extra credit column for extra credit assignments or participation.

  • Create an extra credit column to for a “grade curve” and assign all students the same amount of extra credit points.

  • Create a total calculation to show an assignment + the extra credit to students.

Instructions

  1. In your course, navigate to the Gradebook.

  2. Select either the Gradable items or Grades view.

  3. Select the plus sign where you would like to add the column.

  4. Select Add Item.

Column menu and add item option in Gradebook
  1. A pop out tray appears. Select the header to change the name (example: Assignment 1 Extra Credit).

  2. Enter zero (0) for Maximum Points.

  1. Select Save.

NOTE: If you are adding extra credit column to a category or to a calculated grade, extra points do not equal extra percentage.

Example: 5 extra points does not change 95% to 100%.
