Instructors can adjust message settings by going to Course Settings. They can set the following limits on messages within the course:
Students can message anyone in their course
Students can only message staff and students in their groups
Students can only message staff
Students can only reply to messages
Turn all messages off, which sends all messages by email only

To access the Messages options:
At the top-right of the course, select Course Settings.
Scroll down to the Course Tools section.
Under Messages, choose the desired option(s).
