Error - Students receive "Request Access" page

Problem

When attempting to access a Panopto video, students receive a “Request access” page.

If the Viewer does not have permission to access the video, they will be taken to the "Request Access" page, where only Admins and the video's Creator(s) can grant the Viewer with permission.

Example of the Request Access message in Panopto

To solve this issue, the instructor needs to know to which video(s) students need access and in which Panopto folder the video(s) live. This information is in the email that Admins and instructors receive to grant access.

Example:

The user Big Al (blackboard\bigal) has requested access to the session titled "UA Fight Song" in the folder "12345.202110: 202110-CIT-101-001". To grant them access simply click the link below.

  • This user is likely enrolled in one of your current courses and clicked on a link to the video “UA Fight Song”.

  • The video is in a folder for a previous course, and your current student(s) do not have access to this video.

Solutions

Instructors have a couple of ways to solve this issue: Add permission to the original video or copy the video to the course folder.

(1) Give current students permission to access previous course folder

  1. In Blackboard, confirm that the course menu has a Course Videos link. If not, add the Course Videos tool link to your course menu.

  2. Then click on the Course Videos link to confirm that your course has a linked Panopto folder.

  3. In the Panopto interface, click on the search bar and type in the previous course name. The previous folder should populate.

  4. The previous folder’s contents will show. Find the video your students need to access and hover your mouse over the video.

  5. A set of icons will appear. Select the Share icon.

  6. In the Share settings, type in the Course Name of your current course. A list should populate. Choose the item with your current course and “Viewer.”

  7. Click Save. Students in the current course should now be able to view your previous video.

(2) Copy the original video(s) to the current Panopto course folder

Select the Settings (gear) icon.

  6. In the Settings pop-up window, choose the Manage tab on the left side.

  7. In the Copy video section, use the dropdown menu to search/enter your current semester’s course.

  8. Then choose one of the copy options to copy this video to your current semester course folder.
