Course Menu Explained

Default items

There are certain features on the course menu when a course is created. An new course starts with:

  • Course Home Page: An empty content area.

  • My Alerts: A new module page.

  • My Grades: A tool link for students to view their grades.

  • Tool Panel: A tool link for course tools options.

  • Course Videos: A tool link for using the lecture capture tool - Panopto.


Icons & buttons

At the top of the Course Menu, there are four icons. On most screens they are small, depending on your screen resolution.

  • The plus sign icon is used to add menu items (content area, tool link, web link)

  • The up/down arrows icon is for keyboard accessible reordering for menu items.

  • The circle arrows icon is used to refresh the menu.

  • The folder icon is used to open the course menu in its own window.

A. A gray square to the right of the link/content area indicates that it is not available to students.

B. A gray square with a line through it indicates that there is nothing in the Content Area yet.

C. The action link (arrow button) next to each menu item opens a menu allowing you to:

  • rename the link

  • show it to students (if it has the grey box next to it),

  • permit observers (this is a role often used for student athlete advisors),

  • or remove the link.


Organize the menu

When you hover over a menu item, a grey slider button appears to its left. Click on this and drag to move a link up or down in the menu.
