How do I see only one group of students in a large course Grade Center?

A smart view is a focused look at the Grade Center that shows only the columns that match a set of criteria, and the view is saved for continued use. The following guide will teach users to:

The Grade Center shows the list of students as one large list. By creating a Smart View, teaching assistants can view and grade their section, or smaller portion of students.

Instructions

Create a Group

Before creating a smart view, TAs need to create groups of their students.

  1. On the bottom-left menu, choose Users and Groups. Then click on Groups. On the next page, point to Create Single Group on the action bar to access the drop-down list.

  2. Select Manual Enroll.

  3. On the Create Group page, name the group.

  4. Select a Yes/No option to make the Group Available/Unavailable.

  5. Choose appropriate Tool Availability and personalization settings.

  6. Check the box for Create a Smart View.

  7. Click the Add Users button to choose members for this group. TAs will need to go through their myBama rosters to know who to select.

  8. Click Submit.

Newly created groups will appear on the Groups page. Repeat for each Teaching Assistant and each section of the class.

Create a Smart View

If you did not check the box for “Create Smart View” while creating the group, here are the steps to create Smart Views in the Grade Center.

  1. Access the Full Grade Center (Grade Center>Full Grade Center).

  2. Select Manage and then click Smart Views.

  3. Click on Create Smart View.

  4. On the Create Smart View page, name the Smart View after one of the groups you just created (ex. TA: John Smith).

  5. Click the check box for Add as Favorite (this box makes a link for the Smart View underneath the Full Grade Center Link)

  6. Beside Type of View, under number 2, select Course Group: View one of more Course Groups.

  7. In the Value box, choose the group that corresponds with the name of this Smart View (ex. TA: John Smith)

  8. Click Submit.

Make a Smart View Favorite

If you did not make it a favorite during set-up, use these steps to make the Smart View a favorite on the Grade Center Menu.

  1. Access the Full Grade Center (Grade Center>Full Grade Center) on the Course Management Menu.

  2. On the Action Bar, select Manage and then click Smart Views.

  3. On the Smart View page, you should see the Smart View for your group. Click on the corresponding

    green star to add it to the bottom-left menu (underneath Full Grade Center)

  4. Click OK in the bottom-right corner of this page.

  5. Your Smart View should now show on the bottom-left menu under Full Grade Center.
